June 2, 2023

Spent two nights in Halls Creek canyon with some cool people for a late spring backpack. Taylor, Kendra, and Brian came out from Kansas plus Darren, Mason, Bridger and I for some good times in the southern end of Capitol Reef.

We had the most amazing weather for this trip. It was not too hot, the nights were fine, and no rain until we were heading home. There were lots of flowers and blooming cacti.  And sand. Lots of sand that made the hiking harder and got everywhere but was nice to sleep, sit, and walk on at camp.  Saw some neat stuff in the narrows. The deep part was super cool and the one alcove was beyond tall.

Super cool that we were the only ones down there. Well, besides the frogs. And biting flies and gnats.  (Those biting flies were the worst. Luckily they were not at camp.) We saw zero people until we were almost back to the trailhead on Friday. Zero people. In an awesome place. It was fabulous!

Highs - being with cool people, being the only people in the canyon for the trip, narrows - especially the deep part and tall alcove, great camp spot, the view of the reef, amazing weather, tadpoles and toads, blooming cacti.

Lows - some people had blisters, cutting the trip short, the hike out of the canyon, biting flies and a few gnats, long hike in through sand.
